Battlefield commanders need secure, real-time communications’ systems to improve situational awareness,” said Ralph Moslener, Boeing JTRS GMR program director. The Boeing Company’s Joint Tactical Radio System Ground Mobile Radios (JTRS GMR) can connect multiple nodes across a self healing, multi-channel network that lets commanders obtain data, images, and video from multiple sources and give it to mobilized troops to make decisions quickly. It supports information sharing and combat readiness between service branches and takes network situation awareness beyond the Tactical Operations Center.
Over 100 pre-EDM JTRS GMR radios are operating in test environments across the United States. Through continuous program field-testing, Boeing has assessed the Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW), the backbone of the radio’s Internet-like capabilities.
The JTRS GMR system is flexible. It lets troops easily enter or exit the network and configure the four-channel GMR with multiple simultaneous waveform combinations. What’s more, “One WNW channel on the GMR system delivers the same throughput as multiple legacy radios,” added Moslener.
