Moxa Achieves IRIS Certification

Moxa has joined an elite group of companies worldwide to achieve International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) certification for passenger information and communication systems. The certification was awarded to Moxa’s Design and Engineering headquarters in Taiwan following a recent audit by the AFNOR Group.

The IRIS certification for passenger information and communication systems is among the most stringent international standards to achieve, in part due to demanding process requirements that assume a project time-span of 20 to 30 years. Only 75 companies worldwide have received the IRIS certification, whereas an estimated 700,000 companies have received the more well-known ISO 9001 certification.

IRIS certification is a significant differentiator, not only for railway customers, but for any customer that requires reliable communications in harsh conditions, according to John Yelland, Vice President of Global Marketing at Moxa. The IRIS requirements for time and cost management, product reliability and maintenance, life cycle cost, and more are highly relevant to other industries such as power, oil and gas, intelligent transportation systems, factory and marine automation. The message to all our customers is that Moxa is both committed and able to meet some of the highest and most stringent quality standards required by any industry.

The IRIS standard is formulated by Union of the European Railway Industries (UNIFE) and combines the general quality requirements of ISO 9001 with stringent process and railway-specific requirements. These requirements cover:

  • Technical safety policies
  • Project management (time and cost management)
  • RAMS management (reliability, availability, maintainability, safety)
  • LCC: life cycle cost
  • Obsolescence management
  • Configuration management
  • First article inspection.

In addition to strengthening Moxa’s position in IEC railway committees as experts in railway networking technology, the IRIS certificate also represents the company’s total commitment to quality processes, Yelland notes. This is a significant milestone for Moxa, and I look forward to sharing news about our IRIS certification with our railway customers and our customers in other industries.
